Ben Stein is my new personal hero

A few truths, for those who have ears and eyes and care to know the truth:

1.) The hurricane that hit New Orleans and Mississippi and Alabama was an astonishing tragedy. The suffering and loss of life and peace of mind of the residents of those areas is acutely horrifying.

2.) George Bush did not cause the hurricane. Hurricanes have been happening for eons. George Bush did not create them or unleash this one.

3.) George Bush did not make this one worse than others. There have been far worse hurricanes than this before George Bush was born.

...

5.) George Bush had nothing to do with the hurricane contingency plans for New Orleans. Those are drawn up by New Orleans and Louisiana. In any event, the plans were perfectly good: mandatory evacuation. It is in no way at all George Bush's fault that about 20 percent of New Orleans neglected to follow the plan. It is not his fault that many persons in New Orleans were too confused to realize how dangerous the hurricane would be. They were certainly warned. It's not George Bush's fault that there were sick people and old people and people without cars in New Orleans. His job description does not include making sure every adult in America has a car, is in good health, has good sense, and is mobile.

6.) George Bush did not cause gangsters to shoot at rescue helicopters taking people from rooftops, did not make gang bangers rape young girls in the Superdome, did not make looters steal hundreds of weapons, in short make New Orleans into a living hell.

...

10.) If the energy the news media puts into blaming Bush for an Act of God worsened by stupendous incompetence by the New Orleans city authorities and the malevolence of the criminals of the city were directed to helping the morale of the nation, we would all be a lot better off.

...

Why is it that the snipers who shot at emergency rescuers trying to save people in hospitals and shelters are never mentioned except in passing, and Mr. Bush, who is turning over heaven and earth to rescue the victims of the storm, is endlessly vilified?

When the city government simply ignores its own sick and hospitalized and elderly people in its evacuation order, is Mr. Bush to blame for that?

I'll agree...as much as i don't like him, Bush did not cause the hurricanes.

However, when it was Florida and there was an important election right around the corner there were convoys lined up before the storms hit and they rolled in as soon as the storm cleared.

Here, no election, no immeadiate help.

Also, the LA National Guard is seriously undermanned at home because of GW's war on terror in iraq.

So, no, assholes shotting at helicopters are not GW's fault. The fact that the helicopters didn't get there until 3 days later may be pinned on him.

Unfortunatly, one aspect of leadership is taking the responsibilty when something, or someone, under you goes wrong. That just goes with the territory and it is a part of being president. He is going to be roasted, just because he is the head guy.

That's just the point though. What happened in Louisiana is not his fault. The most that can properly be pinned to him is FEMA's response. But that would never has been as bad if the Louisiana governor and the NO mayor had actually done their jobs and taken measures to prevent disasters like this from happening. The Louisiana governor is the head of the state, she had control over this problem (obviously not the hurricane, but they've certainly known for years that this was going to happen someday and NO was in incredible danger), and yet they ROYALLY screwed up in their protection of NO and of their state.

This is a basic problem of the American people having NO CLUE who is responsible for what. Everyone thinks the federal govn't is responsible for everything that happens in this country, which is emphatically not the case. The PReisdent and the federally government, from the Constitution, has two basic tasks: oversee interstate activities (as opposed to an intrastate activitiy... like protecting one's state and taking measure to minimize damage should a natural disaster occur), and protecting from foreign aggressors. This is why the constitution gave the states the power of collecting taxes and not the federal government. The states have the power in most situations (or are supposed to but that was largely whittled away last century).

The head guy of Louisiana, who, also, by the way, prevented Red Cross from coming into the state the first day, should be roasted. The President really does not have much responsbility here, which is what the American people don't get.

Plus, the President isn't even the head guy of the government. He's the leader of one of the three co-equal branches. The President does not have a lot of power. He really can't do much witout Congress. But it's easier to focus on him, since he is one guy, instead of the 500-some members of Congress. That's where the real power is.

I completely understand, and as much as I dislike Bush, I agree with most of your points. But, that was just what I was pointing out. It is an unfortunate aspect of leadership, you will take the blame for others mistakes, because in the end, you are are viewed as the one who has the ultimate control and is the leader.

One more point. While Bush is the only the leader of one of the branches of government, he is the most visible and easily associated leader of the US. Hence, the country turning to him as the leader with good or bad reviews. It goes with the territory of his position. While he may not hold much power, as a mass people can be stupid and they look for the easiest person to blame, whether or not it's true or not. And he's it.
